Hi Bernie,

God it's terrible for your trying to find the right combo of meds that will work for you.  Unfortunately we are not all the same and what will work for one may not work for the other.

My Consultant didn't put me on Amitriptaline.  I'm on Cymbalta along with Lyrica and Neurontin for the nerve pain.  To be honest, from what I've read on other forums Amitriptaline is not the "drug of choice" anymore it's been overtaken by the newer drugs eg Cymbalta.  Sure the drug companies have to keep making their money somehow ;)

That's all hear nor there though.  What really matters is that you find the right ones for you.  I did have problems with the Lyrica & the Cymbalta when I started them initially but my Pharmacist (who deserves a medal for putting up with me) helped me and advised me to stick them out - she told me to try them for a month.  It was difficult but I got used to them eventually.

That's not to say they have their side effects, they do.  I've got used to the spaced out mad feelings - they happen very seldom now and for not as long but it's the short term memory loss, weight gain, slurred words etc that I find I can't get used to - nor do I want to....Stan has it right when she talks about the love/hate relationship we have with these drugs, especially Lyrica.  We all know there are more side effects but unfortunately what other options do we have?

It's mad isn't it.  Most people can't believe that even taking all these tablets we still have pain.

I met an Australian Psychologist at the weekend and we got talking about drugs.  Janey I better quantify that by saying we were talking about legal drugs.  She had bad neck pain for about six months.   Turned out it was all to do with stress.   She was surprised that nothing really took the pain away altogether.  What she did try and was telling me about was  "Mindfullness"  -  meditation, stress reduction, yoga, etc etc.

Might try it sometime... ;)

Hope to see you next week too.

Phil
