Researchers at the Centre for Pain Research based at NUI, Galway are carrying out a major new study looking at the extent and impact of chronic pain in Ireland. The study, funded by the Health Research Board and the HSE, will be the first large scale project of its kind to examine how common chronic pain is within Ireland and what impact it is having on people’s lives.


Dr. Brian McGuire & Ms Miriam Raftery, from the Centre for Pain Research and School of Psychology, NUIG will coordinate the two year study. As well as looking at the prevalence and impact of chronic pain, the study also aims to explore the costs incurred by people with varying degrees of chronic pain.

Leading researchers in pain medicine and health economics at the Centre for Pain Research, NUI Galway will supervise two Health Research Board-funded summer scholars in projects on Chronic Pain over the coming months, following a highly competitive awards scheme for summer research scholarships. Edel Smith, a second year economics and maths students and Gerard Healy, a second year medicine student will be supervised by Dr Brenda Gannon, Senior Researcher, Irish Centre for Social Gerontology (ICSG) and Drs Brian McGuire and David Finn, Co-Directors of the Centre for Pain Research, NUI Galway, respectively.

Chronic pain treatment 'failing'. A new survey has revealed that a significant number of people with chronic Pain in Ireland are continuing to suffer from the condition despite treatment efforts. According to the findings, chronic pain management is failing for one-third of Irish patients with severe chronic pain. Chronic pain is a long-term, complex condition, which effects people biologically, psychologically and socially. At least two in three sufferers experience pain on a daily basis and one in five go on to be diagnosed with depression as a result. The pain may affect one or two areas of the body, however some people experience pain throughout their body.

The CPI attended a two day patient-led conference during January where a European-wide initiative entitled Neuropathic Pain Symptom Awareness Campaign (NPSAC) was agreed and the campaign is to be launched throughout Europe by various chronic pain associations.

Ireland will kick start the campaign during June 2009 and the initiative aims to lessen the gap between the language used by the GP and the language used by the patient, thus assisting with earlier diagnosis and treatment of the condition.

A research team at NUI, Galway has received a Health Research Board Project Grant to investigate the effectiveness of a Canadian intervention programme aimed at preventing or reducing the high levels of disability often associated with chronic pain. Lead investigator Dr. Brian McGuire from the Centre for Pain Research and School of Psychology at NUI Galway will oversee the three-year study.
